Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM, has welcomed the news that the Queensland government has moved to fast-track legislation to appoint a Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner.

This is one of the priority areas the Mayor called on the government yesterday to action, following over a decade of advocacy from Goondiwindi Regional Council.

The Queensland government has confirmed that they are swiftly moving to address longstanding border complexities by introducing urgent legislation to create the position of Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner. The bill is set to be tabled in parliament later tonight.

“This is a significant step forward for border communities,” said the Mayor.

"As a border town, we've experienced firsthand the challenges and inconsistencies faced by police and government agencies operating across different jurisdictions," Mayor Springborg said. "Youth offenders, in particular, have exploited these gaps to evade consequences."

The Mayor expressed gratitude to local Member for Southern Downs, James Lister MP, for his persistent advocacy on this issue. He also extended his thanks to Queensland Premier the Honourable Steven Miles for his personal commitment to creating the Cross-Border Commissioner role.

"While this role won't solve all our problems, it's a crucial step towards facilitating cooperation and breaking down barriers that have long hindered our community," Mayor Springborg added.

The new Commissioner will play a vital role in streamlining processes, promoting consistency, and improving service delivery across the border region. By working closely with New South Wales counterparts, the Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner will help to create a seamless environment for residents and businesses living and working in the border zone.

Mayor Springborg commended the Queensland government for prioritising this issue and taking swift action to address the needs of border communities.
