Having received overwhelmingly positive community support, Goondiwindi Regional Council is pleased to announce the confirmed location of the new off-road bicycle track.

"We're incredibly excited to be moving forward with this fantastic project," says Cr Jason Watts, Transport, Roads, and Youth portfolio holder.

The new site is located on council land between Lamberth Rd and the Cunningham Highway, and aligns seamlessly with the existing cycleway network, making it easily accessible for riders of all ages. It also provides easy access for emergency personnel and a tree line that can act as a natural barrier and limit the impact on neighbouring residents.

"This track is more than just a place to ride," emphasised Cr Watts. "It's about promoting healthy lifestyles, providing a safe space for young people to unleash their creativity on bicycles, and encouraging responsible riding habits."

Council officers have now visited a leading example of bicycle tracks in the Stenner Street Skills Park, Toowoomba. In consultation with the Toowoomba Regional Council team, Council has also developed a rough sketch based on their experience. Council has also sourced more than 200 tonnes of dirt ready for installation.

With an existing busy capital works program locked in for this year, an external contractor is currently being engaged to handle the earthmoving works. The project start date is anticipated for early 2025.

Goondiwindi Regional Council's proposal draws inspiration from the successful Stenner Street Skills Park track. The track will cater to various skill sets, featuring a raised 2-meter starting ramp leading to two runs, one suited for beginners and another for intermediate riders. A dedicated area offering loose materials will also be included, allowing riders to design their own custom tracks within the site rules.

Residents play a crucial role in shaping the new off-road bicycle track. Your feedback on the current design is highly valued and can be shared through email (mail@grc.qld.gov.au) or by contacting Cr Watts directly (0427 754 591).

Council recognises the benefits of an off-road track, highlighting its ability to promote healthy recreational activities. However, Council’s utmost priority is to ensure that the space provides a safe and controlled environment for riders of all ages and abilities, thereby reducing potential liability risks for ratepayers.

"This is a major step forward for Goondiwindi, and Council looks forward to seeing residents take advantage of this fantastic new track," said Cr Watts.
