Goondiwindi Waste Facility

Goondiwindi Regional Council has announced the installation of a new hard surface green waste area at the Goondiwindi Waste Facility, enhancing the site’s capacity to handle green waste and other bulk materials.

The new hard surface, spanning 14,161m², was built using approximately 800m³ (or 1200 tonnes) of crushed concrete and around 6700 tonnes of recycled road millings from previous Cunningham Highway upgrades. This innovative approach demonstrates Council's commitment to the circular economy and encourages us to rethink waste as a resource for practical use.

Councillor Rob Mackenzie, Goondiwindi Regional Council’s portfolio holder for waste management, praised the initiative, stating, "It was great to be able to demonstrate that the reuse of materials is a viable option for some of our waste streams, and it was also the most cost-effective way of delivering more space for green waste at the Goondiwindi facility."

The project was delivered in partnership with Proterra Group, who undertook the construction and management of the project.

"These road millings would have ended up in a stockpile somewhere growing weeds, but they now have another lease of life providing a good surface for users of our facility," added Cr Mackenzie.

The project improves the quality of the Resource Recovery Area’s foundation, facilitating better storage and processing of bulk materials, such as green waste. Contract mulchers can now easily access uncontaminated stockpiles and operate their equipment without affecting customer access.

This upgrade is a significant stride in the Goondiwindi community's journey towards reducing landfills and promoting sustainable practices. By using recycled materials and enhancing the efficiency of green waste handling, we are not only improving our waste management but also contributing to a healthier environment for our community.
