Keeping of Cats
Council’s Local Law No 2 (Animal Management) 2011(PDF, 155KB) and Subordinate Local Law No 2 (Animal Management) 2018(PDF, 2MB) define the designated town areas and the number of animals that can be kept on properties located within them.
The keeping of three (3) cats over the age of three (3) months is permitted on an allotment located within a designated town area, unless the premises is multi-residential, where a maximum of one (1) cat can be kept.
The keeping of four (4) cats over the age of three (3) months on an allotment located within a designated town area is only permissible with a permit to keep a fourth cat.
The keeping of more than four (4) cats over the age of three (3) months on an allotment located within a designated town area is strictly prohibited.
Fourth Cat Permits
An application for a permit to keep a fourth cat can be made to Council by completing the application form(PDF, 117KB) and paying the prescribed fee. Applications are assessed against the requirements set out in the Local Law. The permits are required to be renewed annually and a fee applies.
Cat microchipping
From the 1st July 2010, cat owners are required to microchip their cats as follows:
- after eight (8) weeks old and before twelve (12) weeks of age
- cats that are “supplied” (sold or given away) must be microchipped before they are sold or given away.
Failure to microchip your cat or any cat that you sell or give away to anyone else may result in you being issued with a fine.
Owner obligations
In addition to the requirement to microchip your cat, owners must:
- provide a suitable enclosure to contain their cat to their property and prevent its escape
Failure to comply with this requirement may also result in you being issued with a fine.
