Last weekend, Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM joined the Goondiwindi Hospital Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) team to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary.

Throughout this milestone, the MGP team has helped deliver over 1500 babies into the region.

The celebration recognised the collaborative midwifery led approach to maternity care locally, their accomplishments and acknowledged their role as the foundation for local maternity care in the years to come.

“I wish to sincerely thank and commend these specialised nurses for their exceptional work and dedication in supporting the women and families in our region,” Cr Springborg said.

“With over 1500 babies delivered into our community, their invaluable service has been remarkable.

“It can be tricky in the regions to sustain this mode of collaborative healthcare, where women get to see one or two midwives their entire pregnancy, but despite the challenges, our midwifery team perseveres, meeting challenges with success and going from strength to strength.

“I also would also like to acknowledge the doctors, who provide high level anaesthetic and obstetric skills, which is critical to the success of MGP,” he said.

MGPs are a continuity model of care that can result in lower rates of intervention during pregnancy, labour and delivery for women and can lead to better outcomes for mothers and babies, such as a lower risk of preterm birth and fetal loss.

“We are very privileged to have such an excellent local model of maternity care, especially when so many other places around Queensland  have lost, or have had their maternity services downgraded,” the Mayor said.
