With 150 RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctors, 4 Air Ambulance jets, 6 community helicopters, and decades of aeromedical experience, LifeFlight understands the importance of the first minutes in critical care.

Drawing on this knowledge, LifeFlight is providing a free trauma education program, First Minutes Matter, for Goondiwindi regional residents at Goondiwindi, Inglewood and Texas during the last week of April.

This free 5.5 hour community training demonstrates that individuals in the general community can deliver vital medical assistance if they happen to be the initial responders at the site of an accident.

The First Minutes Matter program provides an opportunity to learn practical skills such as how to help a person who is choking, types of burns and treatments, how to control bleeding and perform CPR, among other lifesaving knowledge.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM agreed that patient outcomes could be improved by actions taken by first responders before emergency crews arrive.

“This type of training can potentially save lives,” Cr Springborg said. “As a region of nearly 20,000km2, an ambulance can take time to get to incidents whether they be on farm or on the road.  You just never know when you will need this training.”

With LifeFlight’s experienced trainers, Goondiwindi region community members can learn how to assess a situation and provide basic medical care for time-critical medical situations while professional help is on the way

Anyone wishing to attend this training can secure a position at their nearest workshop by registering at https://www.lifeflight.org.au/first-minutes-matter

Council is proud to support this initiative through the Community Recovery and Resilience Project, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Funding Arrangements.
