One of the largest independent Australian Newspaper Companies, Today News Group, recently acquired the Australian Community Media (ACM) Goondiwindi Argus, demonstrating confidence in the region’s potential and resilience.

The most recent weekly editions of the Goondiwindi Argus have undergone a transformation, featuring more localised content, an increased page count, and a community-driven approach, all reflected in its improved aesthetic appearance.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Regional Council the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the Argus has always been the heart of the community, connecting readers as it brings local issues to light.

“The Argus has always been a reliable and relevant source of news for the local community and I am very pleased to hear that local journalist Ian Jones’s role has transitioned from a focus on the paper’s layout to being funded to write and deliver content that is relevant to the region's residents,” Cr Springborg said.

The Argus has a long history of engaging readers with local news in print, dating back to its inception in the 1880s, and digitally. Despite facing challenges in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which included the termination of the weekly printed newspaper, the Argus was able to survive thanks to the support of regional residents who bought digital subscriptions.

"We are incredibly fortunate to have two newspapers serving our region - the Goondiwindi Argus and the Macintyre Gazette. I urge residents and businesses to wholeheartedly support these local papers whenever possible. Local journalism plays a vital role in keeping our community informed and engaged with the important news and events in our region,” Cr Springborg said.

The Goondiwindi Argus is available to purchase in print every Wednesday and online through subscription.
