  • Bowen Street, Goondiwindi is the location of a new EV charging station as part of the Queensland Government initiative
  • Charging sites help regional economies bring in a new brand of tourism
  • The new infrastructure at no cost to Council or ratepayers will be maintained and administered by Chargefox

The Goondiwindi Region has been identified by the Queensland Government, in partnership with Yurika, as a location for infrastructure to support the Queensland Electric Super Highway (QESH) with a new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging site.

The QESH Phase 3 EV installation of a charging station in the public carpark on the southern side of Bowen Street, between Herbert and McLean Streets, in Goondiwindi is now complete however; the station will not be operational until later in the year.

The combination of AC and DC chargers managed and administered by Chargefox will permit battery vehicles to charge at different rates to allow uninhibited long-distance travel. Simply download the Chargefox app to find and use charging stations as well as to make convenient payments.

While the infrastructure and connection of the charging site are funded by the Queensland government and Yurika, users will pay to charge their vehicles at 30 cents per kilowatt.

Visitors to the Goondiwindi Region will have approximately 20 minutes to 1 hour to browse local businesses and visitor sites while waiting for their vehicle to fast-charge.

Councillor Jason Watts holds Council’s portfolio for Roads and Transport and said the fast chargers are typically installed in a convenient location near amenities, such as cafes, restaurants and shops.

“The site will allow users to easily charge their vehicle, enjoy a short break visiting local businesses and tourism operators, and prepare for a safe journey,” Cr Watts said.

“By adapting new technologies, we are now opening our region to the EV tourism market.”

The QESH Phase 3 will connect electric vehicle drivers across a range of routes—from Goondiwindi to Emerald, Brisbane to Mount Isa via the Dinosaur Trail locations, Cunnamulla to Barcaldine and Longreach to Cairns and will add an extra 24 locations to the network - delivering connections along the Queensland/New South Wales border with the planned charging station at Goondiwindi and another at Stanthorpe.
