  • Rural addressing benefits rural residents with quicker response times from Emergency Services and other providers
  • Apply now for Council to install your rural property address sign
  • Rural residents are also encouraged to update their telephone providers details with their rural property number, as these are linked to ‘000’ emergency operator computer systems

Finding a specific rural property can be difficult for many service providers including Emergency Services. The rural-address system assigns unique numbered addresses to properties based on their distance from the start of the road to the property entrance. The distance is measured in metres and then divided by 10 to determine the rural address. For properties on the right-hand side, the numbers are rounded to the nearest even number, while those on the left-hand side are given an odd number.

Residents can apply to Council for a new sign or to replace a damaged or stolen sign.  Council will install the star picket, plastic module and reflective numbering stickers for our rural residents.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said we have all experienced or heard of a situation where the outcome of an emergency situation relied on response times.

“The rural-addressing system is the quickest and easiest way for Emergency Services to find you when time is of the essence and alleviates the risky use of local landmarks like a unique post box when communicating with emergency services.”

“We are also encouraging rural residents to take the time to check existing rural address signage, making sure it is clearly visible from both directions and free from roadside weeds and the like,” he said.

“It’s also recommended that property owners update their telephone service provider details, removing the old lot and mail service numbers as the telecommunications provider details are also linked to ‘000’ emergency operators technology.
