War Memorials Across Goondiwindi Region Documented

« Back

Over 40 war memorial boards, acknowledging more than 2,000 service men and women, have been identified and recorded as part of the Goondiwindi Region War Memorial Register project. The register, funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), was collated by Ms Deborah Wheeler from Warwick and recently presented to Goondiwindi Regional Council.

Ms Wheeler's undertaking is no small feat, covering a vast region spanning nearly 20,000 square kilometres. Reflecting on her work, Ms Wheeler remarked, "It has been an honour to undertake this project and contribute to preserving the Goondiwindi region's rich history of service and sacrifice. I am thankful for Council's RADF program for supporting this initiative”.

Goondiwindi Region Mayor, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM, emphasised the importance of commemorating the bravery and dedication of our servicemen and women, stating, "War memorials stand as poignant reminders of the selflessness and courage displayed by those who served our nation. Ms Wheeler's dedication to documenting these memorials and support of the local RSL are commendable. It ensures that their legacy endures for future generations."

War memorials hold a significant place in our communities, not confined to monuments alone but also found in schools, halls, churches, and even private residences. The $4,450 of funding provided by RADF has ensured the many war memorials of the Goondiwindi region are accessible to all. Residents are encouraged to contact Ms Wheeler if they are aware of a memorial that may not have been accounted for so that it can be captured.

Hard copies and digital copies of the register are available for viewing at the Goondiwindi, Inglewood, and Texas libraries.

Looking ahead, Ms Wheeler aims to secure further funding to develop a comprehensive online database detailing each service person from the region. Ms Wheeler also worked with the local Goondiwindi RSL sub-branch on their 105th anniversary book.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Goondiwindi Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. In the 2023-24 financial year, RADF has funded countless projects across the region, including the Goondiwindi State High School and upcoming St Mary's School musicals; Texas has Talent workshops; Inglewood Children's Theatre boot camp; and the Greenup showcase. 2023-24 funds for this program are currently exhausted. The program is expected to reopen on 1 July 2024.

Council looks forward to supporting more arts, cultural and heritage projects across the region.
