Community Success with Talwood Name Change

« Back

It’s official - North Talwood and South Talwood are now a single locality under the Place Names Act 1994 and are to be collectively known as Talwood. This is a welcome announcement for Council, the Talwood Community Consultative Committee (Talwood CCC), and residents of Talwood who have worked collectively over the last two years to achieve this outcome.

Deputy Mayor, Cr Rob Mackenzie, is thrilled that the change has been officially endorsed by the Queensland Government’s Department of Resources: “No-one is entirely sure how the area was officially named North and South Talwood in the first place, as residents have always referred to the town as Talwood,” he said.

Residents impacted by this change should have all received a letter from the Queensland Department of Resources outlining the timeline and next steps for the name change. Council will update our internal records, but residents will be responsible for updating their address with service suppliers.

The Talwood CCC meets several times a year, with a meeting held just last week where the group prioritised their next project which will be introduction of commercial grade fairy lights in the main street. The total estimated value of this project is $40,000.00 and is funded by Council who supplies the group with an annual budget to deliver key masterplan projects.

“In recent years we have had the majority of councillors in attendance at each meeting to listen to local concerns and answer community questions”, adds Cr Mackenzie. “We value the time and effort residents put in to attend these meetings”.

Previous activities undertaken by the Talwood CCC through their Masterplan include repairs to the Talwood Railway Station, upgrades to the Talwood Hall, and new signage and shade shelters on picnic tables at the Recreation Grounds and entry to town.
