Funding exhausted for mowing of State roads

This fortnight, we've encountered a hurdle with mowing state-controlled roads in our region. Unfortunately, the Queensland Government's allocated funds for highway roadside maintenance have been exhausted, and no new resources will be available until July 2024. While this means there may be delays in mowing these roads, rest assured that our council crews will continue to prioritise the mowing of local roads throughout the Goondiwindi region. It's important to note that this funding shortage isn't unique to our area, and we are actively advocating for increased resources to ensure a safe, clean, and tidy environment across our region.

New solar farm kicks off in the region

I was pleased to join fellow Councillors at the recent solar farm sod-turning near Goondiwindi. The construction and ongoing operation of the solar power station farm will bring significant activity and job opportunities to our local economy. Unlike wind power station farms, solar projects require local government approval through town planning processes. This provides council with a voice on behalf of residents and a clear understanding of the project's impact. Council has already begun discussions on leveraging this project to build local capacity and develop long-term legacy initiatives that will benefit the broader community post construction.

Darling Downs South West Council of Mayors meets for the first time this new Council term

Last week, I joined Mayors and CEO’s from the ten councils that make up Darling Downs South West Council of Mayors group. This was our first official gathering since the recent local government elections, and it was a chance to welcome new faces to the group. While welcoming new perspectives, the Council of Mayors group retains a wealth of experience and leadership. Together, we established five critical priorities for the region moving forward. One of the top priorities is advocating for a change to Queensland's current one-size-fits-all approach to waste management, a system costing local governments millions. We're also committed to maximising the opportunities for our communities as the region sees a growing presence of large-scale renewable energy projects. By working together, our ten councils can voice our concerns and solutions and aim to achieve more results than what would be likely accomplished by tackling these challenges alone.

Yelarbon Men’s Shed breakfast is a great morning out

Many of my fellow councillors and I enjoyed attending the Yelarbon Men's Shed breakfast held at the shed this past week. It was an excellent event, drawing a strong crowd of around 35 attendees, including local ladies. Guest speaker Julia Bass provided a thought-provoking discussion on relationships, families, and communication styles, sparking lively conversation amongst the group. The high turnout is a testament to the Yelarbon Men's Shed's dedication to fostering connection and well-being within our community. Congratulations to the entire team for organising another successful event.

Community consultation continues through the Yelarbon CCC and VIC Steering Committee

I also chaired meetings this fortnight with two important community groups: the Yelarbon Community Consultative Committee and the Goondiwindi Visitor Information Centre Steering Committee. These meetings provide invaluable opportunities for residents to engage directly with council and share their insights on the challenges and opportunities facing our region. Thanks to all those who attended, and I encourage locals to get involved when these opportunities arise.

Council welcomes funding for a new Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner role

This week, I welcomed the Queensland government's commitment to our region by announcing funding for a dedicated Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner role. For over a decade our council and our local state member James Lister MP, have championed the creation of this position. A Cross-Border Commissioner will play a vital role in negotiating practical solutions for our community, considering the unique challenges and opportunities that arise from our proximity to the state border. This includes issues such as water policy and policing, child services, and healthcare delivery. Council looks forward to working with the Commissioner when appointed, to deliver significant outcomes for the residents and businesses of our region.  We ultimately hope that this position working alongside their NSW counterpart will help to foster a seamless environment for our cross-border residents.
