The cessation of the weekly print edition of the Goondiwindi Argus is disappointing for many of our residents, says Mayor of the Goondiwindi region the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg, AM.

Australian Community Media (ACM) formally announced this week, that it would ‘until further notice’ cease to print its weekly edition of the Goondiwindi Argus. The title is currently online-only, as a free-to-read digital paper.

Cr Springborg said the loss of the Argus’ print edition would leave a very real gap in the region’s community. The printed paper has served Goondiwindi and the surrounding region since the publication began in the 1880s.

“Local newspapers are a critical source of communication, connectivity, and sense of community in regional areas such as ours, and the loss of our weekly printed paper will be keenly felt by many residents,” Cr Springborg said.

“In regional areas, local newspapers such as the Argus play a crucial role in keeping their communities informed and engaged.

“From local news to advertisements, vacancies, events, achievements, viewpoints and obituaries, their publication tells the wider story of our region as a whole.”

Readers will be able to view the free online Argus at www.goondiwindiargus.com.au. No subscription will be required, and readers will also be able to download and print as well as digitally view past versions of the printed paper.

Council understands that no jobs will be lost in the transition, although some employees will have their hours reduced. Cr Springborg has expressed his support for the staff impacted by the announcement and said it is a critical time to support local journalism.

“Regional journalism is driven by a dedication to a place and its people, and I applaud the staff of the Goondiwindi Argus for their ongoing commitment to our community and for ensuring our residents get the news and stories that matter to them,” the Mayor said.

“We remain very fortunate in that we have two newspapers based in our region - the MacIntyre Gazette in print and the Argus online - and I would strongly implore residents and businesses to support these local papers where they can.

“I am very saddened that ACM are currently not offering the Argus in print form, and I will continue to advocate for the return of print. I hope the current changes rouse our appreciation of the value of our local publications.”
