New Fence at Riddles Oval

The Goondiwindi Region can now boast its answer to the Lord’s Cricket Grounds at the Riddles Oval. A new white picket fence has been installed at the AFL and cricket oval with the help of several local clubs and businesses.

The project was primarily funded by an $18,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Queensland’s largest one-off grants program. The fund allocates grants to not-for-profit community groups to enhance their capacity to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities.

The rest of the funding was provided by the Goondiwindi Sport and Recreation Association through the fees paid by the affiliated sporting clubs that use Riddles Oval.

President of the Goondiwindi Sport and Recreation Association Terry Gleeson said the new fence was the result of great community involvement and that he was very grateful to everyone who had contributed to the project.

‘It’s a big improvement to the old fence – it really catches your eye and you can’t miss it as you’re driving past,’ Mr Gleeson said. ‘It is so good to see the community come together to support this project. It makes a big difference’.

‘I’d really like to thank The Proterra Group for providing their engineering services and plans free of charge, Mackenzies Home Timber and Hardware for storing and delivering our materials for free, Boral for supplying sand, and Makim Carter Builders, D R Francis Plumbing, ACW Irrigation and Knights Plant Hire for all their help.

‘Last but not least, I have to thank the Engineering and Parks and Gardens teams from the Goondiwindi Regional Council for all their help – they’ve been excellent.’

Councillor Lachlan Brennan said that the new fence is a huge improvement on the old one and that feedback is already coming in on what the project means to the local sporting community.

‘I’ve already had some really great comments,’ Councillor Brennan said. ‘The fence really looks very smart and is a great way to impress new visitors as they drive into town’.

‘The community pitched in at every step of the way to bring this project to life – from the AFL club pulling down the old fence to the rugby and cricket clubs helping to put the new one up.

‘I want to thank everyone who’s lent a hand on this project and special thanks to Donna Spink, Tony McLaughlin and former president of the Goondiwindi Sport and Recreation Association, Lesley Syme for their vision and persistence.’
