Safer parking for popular Goondiwindi play area

Goondiwindi region residents will have safer access to the popular Sandhurst Street Park from next week with new sealed parking areas constructed on Moffatt and Sandhurst Streets.

Goondiwindi Regional Council has received a $50,000 grant for the project from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program Grant.

The parking areas will cover 450m2 and include sealed shoulders from the road and full drainage for safer parking. Council will engage local contractors for the bitumen sealing works and equipment hire.

Work will begin today [Friday 28 August] and should be completed by the end of next week.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said that safe and easy access to parks and play areas was particularly important in such a family-oriented region.

“Council is dedicated to ensuring the Goondiwindi region is the ideal place to raise a family, and our popular local parks play an important role in that,” Cr Springborg said.

“We are very fortunate in our region to have such a family-friendly environment. Sandhurst Street Park is just one of 25 Council-managed parks and gardens across the region – and it’s important that people can access those areas easily and safely.

“This year, Council has committed $2 million to maintaining and upgrading parks and gardens across the region – this will include park equipment and facility upgrades as well as town beautification,” the Mayor said.

While the park and play areas will remain open to the public during construction (with pedestrian access via Sandhurst Street), Moffatt Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic between Sandhurst Street and McDougall Street from Monday 31st August.  Works are expected to be completed within the week.

A detour will be in place for affected residents and businesses, and parking will be available on the western side of the park on Zacka Street.

Cr Springborg thanked residents and local businesses for their understanding of the road closure during construction.

“I must thank in advance all those who live near the park and who may be affected by the brief detour - your patience is appreciated and I look forward to the benefits of this work to the broader community.”

The construction will complement previous Council works to upgrade the footpath on Sandhurst Street last year, along with the installation of new CCTV cameras in the park for safety.

The LRCI Grant supports jobs, businesses and the resilience of local economies through the delivery of priority local road and community infrastructure projects.
