Bollard upgrades improve safety at three Goondiwindi parks

Work is underway to replace and upgrade the bollards at three popular Goondiwindi parks for improved safety.

Goondiwindi Regional Council is replacing the old timber posts at McGregor Street Park, Redmond Park and the Goondiwindi Natural Heritage and Water Park with long-lasting new bollards made from recycled plastic.

Council has allocated $77,000 of the State Government’s 2020-21 COVID Works for Queensland (W4Q) program funding to the project.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the upgraded bollards would not only improve park safety, but they would require less maintenance going forward and therefore reduce costs.

“The repair and renewal of public assets have really been Council’s priority for this W4Q funding,” Cr Springborg said.

“This is an opportunity to undertake essential infrastructure upgrades at no cost to the ratepayer – and also reduce Council’s maintenance bill going forward.”

Council manages 25 parks and gardens across the Goondiwindi region. Further park and playground upgrades are scheduled throughout this financial year, and Council will announce details of additional projects in the coming months.

Cr Springborg said the maintenance of the region’s parks and gardens was a central focus for Council.

“We’re lucky to have so many beautiful and well-maintained public parks, play areas and gardens in our region – they’re an essential part of our local lifestyle, and a great asset for residents and visitors alike. I think many visitors recognise the Goondiwindi region as being particularly well-presented and maintained.

“It’s important that we ensure these areas are up-to-date and safe, with modern equipment and facilities. Council is committed to the continued upkeep and improvement of our parks for the whole community.”

The parks and play areas will remain open while work takes place, however access may be affected.

The project will complement recent Council works to upgrade parks across the Goondiwindi region, in addition to scheduled maintenance works. The upgrades include new and replacement picnic areas, shelters, shade sails, barbecues and drinking water fountains.

Goondiwindi Regional Council received $1.35 million in COVID W4Q funding in 2020-21. The funding will be allocated across 17 projects in numerous communities across the Goondiwindi region.
