An exciting new event is coming to Goondiwindi that will showcase the huge variety of careers and opportunities available within the Goondiwindi Region.

Goondiwindi Regional Council is proud to support the Goondiwindi Region Careers, Skills and Opportunities Expo this Friday, 4 June from 4 pm at the Goondiwindi Waggamba Community Cultural Centre.

Delivered in partnership with the Goondiwindi Chamber of Commerce, the free event will promote the types of opportunities available to school leavers and locals looking for a career change, as well as potential new residents.

Special guest and former NRL champion Preston Campbell will deliver the keynote address, followed by a panel discussion with local business ambassadors. There will also be a wide range of interactive trade stall displays to provide inspiration and information about the careers, skilling and lifestyle opportunities available locally.

Executive Officer of the Goondiwindi Chamber of Commerce Terri-Ann Crothers is inviting all residents to come along – and to bring a friend from outside the region if they can.

“The Expo is a wonderful opportunity for people, local and not-so-local, to come along and experience the many opportunities we offer in our region,” Ms Crothers said. “From agribusiness to technology, education to community services, it will all be on display in one location.

“We also encourage everyone to invite an out-of-town friend to the Expo and enter the draw to win one of five $100 Grow Gundy Gift cards,” she said.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Carl Manton said the event was about Council and industry working together towards the shared goal of meeting the region's skilled labour needs.

“People are the core of any economic development for a region, and we are keen to see ours continue to thrive,” Mr Manton said. “That means we need to explore ways we can keep more of our young people in the region, and attract new residents to local job vacancies.

“The Goondiwindi Region is well known for being at the forefront of advances in agricultural technology, as well as being a logistics hub in a key strategic location,” he said. “Many local successful businesses are expanding, and they need more people to fill new roles.”

The Expo is the culmination of the Goondiwindi Regional Skills Investment Strategy (RSIS), a two-year initiative between Council and the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Small Business and Training to ensure there is a supply of skilled people to meet local employment demand.

Since it began in March 2019, the RSIS has delivered a suite of training solutions driven by Goondiwindi Region employers with a 'locals first' approach, including workshops on how to recruit and retain staff, as well as information sessions about local skills and employment.

“Council is extremely proud to deliver this Expo alongside the Goondiwindi Chamber of Commerce,” Mr Manton said. “We have so many opportunities available locally, there really is something for everyone in the Goondiwindi Region – beautiful landscapes, booming industries and a thriving country culture.

“We want to let more people know about what’s on offer, and show why we’re known as ‘Regional Australia at its Best’.”
