Council upgrades improve freight access to Inglewood industrial estate

Heavy vehicle access to the Inglewood industrial estate has been improved thanks to the completion of council upgrades to the east of the town.

Goondiwindi Regional Council has completed a project to widen the intersection of Tomkins Street and Killen Street. The upgrades mean the industrial estate can now better accommodate heavy vehicle turning movements.

The total $108,000 project was co-funded between Council and the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP).

Councillor Jason Watts holds Council’s portfolio for transport and roads and said the project was prioritised to enhance heavy vehicle safety and freight efficiency around Inglewood.

“The Inglewood industrial estate forms an important part of the Goondiwindi Region’s local freight network, Cr Watts said. “This particular section is used frequently by heavy vehicles in particular, including the movement of machinery and plant equipment to and from the Council depot as staff carry out public works across the east of the region.”

The Inglewood industrial estate is on the eastern side of town and includes the Inglewood aerodrome, Council depot, and local transport and freight businesses.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the improvement of heavy vehicle access had also been highlighted to support business growth in the area.

“Efficient freight networks are critical to our region in particular, with a strong economy built on local agricultural excellence,” the Mayor said.

“Our truck drivers are the backbone that keeps local industries moving. This project is about ensuring they can reach their destinations sooner and safer.

“We are extremely grateful to have received this federal government funding through the HVSPP to match Council’s own investment in this project. This is an opportunity to increase productivity for local businesses and improve our local road network, ensuring safe and reliable transport for all users.”

Council’s Inglewood construction crew began preliminary work for the project back in June. The main works began a fortnight ago and were completed last week.

Council engaged a local business to supply the pavement material for the project.
