GOONDIWINDI REGION PLANNING SCHEME PAVES THE WAY FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Goondiwindi Regional Council adopted its new planning scheme at a Special Meeting held yesterday.

The Goondiwindi Region Planning Scheme replaces the three existing planning schemes for the former Goondiwindi Town, Waggamba Shire and Inglewood Shire Councils, with all new development applications lodged with Council to be assessed under the new scheme from today, 15 March 2018.

The Goondiwindi region spans more than 19,000 square kilometres, with a population of around 11,100 residents and boasts thriving rural industries value-adding to rural production, established transport corridors and successful rural tourism.

Councillor Graeme Scheu, Mayor of Goondiwindi Regional Council said an important part of this interaction, as well as being the result of public and targeted consultation, has been the introduction of natural hazard overlay mapping, identifying physical constraints, natural hazards and other features that need to be considered as part of the development assessment process.

“It is exciting to have adopted the new scheme which will guide economic development and jobs, while managing the availability of water resources and the protection of heritage values and it is imperative it is renewed and kept up to date at all times,” Councillor Scheu said.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said, “This scheme will help the Goondiwindi region expand its traditional economic sectors as well as grow new ones, and allow it to tap into the opportunities on offer through its proximity to the Wellcamp Airport, and potentially the Inland Rail route.”

“It’s vital all councils across the state have in place robust, clear, concise and straightforward planning instruments that set the scene for each council’s economic development and community aspirations,” Minister Dick said.

The new planning scheme will take effect from Thursday 15 March 2018 and can be viewed online at https://www.grc.qld.gov.au/planning-scheme.
