Goondiwindi Region flood update – 24 November 2021

« Back

Don’t be alarmed if you hear the flood pumps going in Goondiwindi in the coming days – that’s the message from Goondiwindi Regional Council to local residents.

After a wet start to the week, the Macintyre River is expected to peak at more than a moderate flood level (>6 metres) this [Wednesday] afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted even more rain for our region, with further minor flooding likely from as early as Thursday.

With floodwaters currently moving through the Macintyre River, the floodgates located along the Goondiwindi levee bank are systematically closed to ensure water can’t back up into storm drains within the town.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said Council may need to operate the flood pumps in the coming days to manage any stormwater collecting in the town and pump it back into the river.

“There’s no cause for alarm if you hear the flood pumps working in Goondiwindi – it means they’re simply doing the job they were installed to do,” the Mayor said.

“Council is already carrying out a number of operational activities in response to the earlier rain - from road repairs to debris removal - and is also preparing for any further wet weather coming into the weekend.

“Remember, every flood is different. Check the road conditions before you travel and if it’s flooded - forget it.”

STAY INFORMED, BE AWARE, NOT ALARMED
