Goondiwindi Region Flood Update #6 – Inglewood flood levels receding – 1 December 2021

« Back

The Macintyre Brook at Inglewood Bridge peaked at 11.20 metres early this morning and is currently falling.

The flood level at Inglewood Bridge is easing, however roads into Inglewood remain closed. The state government Department of Transport and Main Roads must inspect and approve the Inglewood Bridge before it is opened.

The key message for Inglewood residents is: do not return home until you are notified that it is safe to do so.

As flood waters recede, residents have been relocated from the Evacuation Assembly Point to the Inglewood Macintyre Centre with better amenities and facilities.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Lawrence Springborg AM spent the night with residents at the evacuation point at the Inglewood cemetery.

He has called the inundation through the town “devastating, especially as we head towards Christmas”.

“We saw an exceptional response to a very short-notice evacuation order in Inglewood, with over 800 residents safely evacuated,” the Mayor said.

“I’m exceptionally proud of the patience and grace of our community.  Their readiness and quick action enabled such a major evacuation in about an hour.

“The priority last night was to save lives. The evacuation point is designed as only a temporary solution with that goal in mind. With very limited facilities, soggy ground and rain still falling, many residents slept in their cars – if they slept at all.  Our residents tolerated some very average conditions, all while worrying about their homes, livelihoods and their fellow community members.

“We’re now hopeful that the waters will recede today – and then begins the massive undertaking of cleaning up. I ask everyone in our region to keep Inglewood residents in your thoughts as we begin this recovery.”

“The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services team are methodically moving through the township assessing the damage and conducting the necessary clearances for residents to return.

“As people return to their homes, hopefully soon, there are a number of risks they need to be aware of, I encourage all residents to visit the Queensland Government website for more information - Returning to affected buildings | Community support | Queensland Government (www.qld.gov.au)
