Valuation Increases Reflect Active Rural Property Market

Ratepayers in the Goondiwindi Region will receive their valuation notices over the next few weeks and will generally see a reasonable increase in rural valuations according to the data released by the Valuer General today.

The Goondiwindi Region was one of several regions to see an increase in the total valuation.  “We have seen pretty consistent increases which means that rates will not be impacted significantly for most people, but there are a small minority that may see some impact, ” Goondiwindi Mayor Graeme Scheu said.

“There is a misconception that Council rates are directly related to changes in people’s valuations but that is not the case.  Council does not get anymore rates because valuations increase.”

“If everyone’s valuation in your rate category changed the same then rates would not change at all, if some increase slightly more or less than others then rates will vary as well but not by the same percentage or proportion as the valuation change.”

“At the end of the day, valuations are based upon sales of similar land in the area so increases mean that the value of the asset people own are increasing.”

If people are not satisfied that their valuation is accurate or that it does not compare favourably to other similar parcels of land, they are encouraged to lodge an objection and have a discussion with the valuers at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines before 8 May 2018.  Details of the objection process and the necessary forms can be obtained by phoning the toll free number on 1300 664 217 or from the departments website www.dnrm.qld.gov.au.
