Second annual meeting in Texas shows commitment to Goondiwindi ‘Regional’ Council

Goondiwindi Regional Council held its March Ordinary Meeting in Texas this morning, marking the third Council meeting in 12 months held outside of Goondiwindi.

It’s now a year on since the first Council meeting in Texas in more than 12 years, and the fourth time that Council has held an Ordinary Meeting outside of Goondiwindi itself since June 2008.

It follows an election commitment to hold one Ordinary Meeting in Inglewood and Texas every six months on rotation for the remainder of the current Council term.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said Council’s annual meetings in Inglewood and Texas are part of an ongoing commitment to bring core decision-making to the wider Goondiwindi Region.

Members of the community joined the Mayor and councillors for morning tea at the Texas Sports Complex once the meeting was finished. Cr Springborg said today’s meeting and following morning tea provided a chance to catch up in-person with Texas residents and hear first-hand the views from the east of the region.

“It is very important and it is why I made the commitment at the start of this term to bring Council’s Ordinary Meetings to local towns outside of Goondiwindi on a regular basis,” Cr Springborg said. “As we’ve demonstrated, this is an ongoing, regular commitment to check in with the community and give residents the opportunity to meet with their Councillors and chat about the matters that are important to them.

“As always, there’s lots of matters in Texas for Council to consider - from the recent refurbishment of the dressing rooms at the Texas Sports Complex, to an upcoming repaint of the Texas Memorial Hall, and of course the recent floods,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the Texas community for a really engaging and informative session this morning,” the Mayor said. “It’s always an invaluable opportunity to catch up face-to-face and have some really constructive conversations.”

The next Ordinary Meeting outside of Goondiwindi is scheduled for Wednesday 28 September in Inglewood. Council will advertise more details closer to the time, with all residents once again invited to attend.

The Mayor and other councillors work from the Inglewood Civic Centre and Texas Cultural Centre on a regular basis. Cr Springborg continues to hold office hours at the Inglewood Civic Centre on the fourth Friday of the month, and from the Texas Cultural Centre on the second Tuesday of the month. Additional appointments are often available in line with visits to these towns - please call 07 4671 7437 to make an appointment.

“My fellow councillors and I continue to hold office hours in Inglewood and Texas as well as elsewhere in the region,” Cr Springborg said. “It’s all part of keeping your ear to the ground and making sure you hear from the people you represent – and that’s the entirety of the Goondiwindi Region, not just Goondiwindi.
