Additional upgrades boost Avon Street kerb appeal in Texas

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM paid a visit to Avon Street in Texas yesterday to inspect new upgrades to the centre islands.

Council has recently upgraded about 600 metres of the existing median strip between Lennon Street and Saint John Street with new concrete kerb edging.

The work complements additional kerb upgrades completed in Avon Street last year, when Council installed new edging around the median strip on the northern end of Avon Street (in the block between Middleton Street and Lennon Street).

The new project has extended the same style of concrete kerb edging as the previous Avon Street works, to keep the road looking tidy and improve its street appeal.

The semi-mountable kerb will also help to prevent drivers from driving or parking on the strip, which has previously damaged the grass and caused dirt to be tracked onto the road.

Cr Springborg said the upgrades have improved the street’s appearance, as well as encouraging proper road use.

“The new edging has vastly improved the overall look of the area and improved the standard of the median strip,” he said. “The new works will also stop the grass from being damaged, which is unsightly for those who live nearby and also costly for Council to maintain. More importantly, the new edging will encourage safer driving and road use.

Cr Jason Watts holds Council’s portfolio for Transport, Roads and Youth, and said we know that concrete kerb edging is one of the most requested infrastructure upgrades across the region,” he said. “In this instance, there was already an existing median strip on Avon Street, so this section was prioritised to reduce the ongoing costs to Council of repairing reoccurring damage. It also extended and complemented the upgrades to another section of the road that Council completed last year.

“Texas has a strong reputation as a picturesque, tidy town - that’s definitely the impression we want visitors to take away with them, and we want local residents to share that feeling of pride about the town’s presentation.”

The project complements a number of recent Council upgrades around Avon Street to improve local facilities, accessibility and beautification, including the installation of two picnic shelters and the replacement of tables and chairs at the street’s popular rest area, and the construction of a new footpath that runs along Wilson Street from Avon Street to Broadway Street (East).

Elsewhere in Texas, Council has also completed a number of works that have focused on improving community assets for residents and visitors alike. These include the installation of new softfall surfacing at the Texas All-Abilities Park, and the construction of a new footpath that connects the popular Dumaresq River rest area to the Texas CBD, encouraging visitors to walk into town and support local businesses.

Council engaged a number of local contractors during the completion of the work.
