Mayor Springborg delivers cross-border commitment with Moree Plains Shire Council
« BackGoondiwindi Regional Council (GRC) and Moree Plains Shire Council (MPSC) have officially formalised a shared vision to commit to improving cross-border outcomes after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last Thursday.
The alliance between GRC and MPSC will achieve outcomes for both councils and their shared communities across several areas. It builds on the strong relationship that already exists between the councils.
The primary focus areas outlined in the MOU include the coordination and delivery of shared services and infrastructure, regional economic development such as tourism, access to training and higher education and disaster management.
The major regional arterial roads are also a focus area under the MOU and both councils will work together to advocate to State and Federal governments for provision of safe and effective transport networks across the Queensland and New South Wales border.
The MOU builds on the recent outcomes achieved through the Cross-Border Crime Committee which has seen both councils jointly facilitate greater coordination and resources from respective State governments.
Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Councillor Lawrence Springborg AM said the MOU will achieve positive outcomes for both councils and their communities.
“Due to their geographic proximity, many Moree Plains Shire Council residents access services and support from the Goondiwindi region, our communities are intrinsically linked and shared,” Mayor Springborg said.
“This shared commitment will strengthen not only our cross-border communities but our respective regions.
“Collaboration is also a key factor in providing essential and effective disaster management planning, coordination, and response,” he said.
This MOU compliments discussions for similar agreements with our other neighbouring border region councils.
