The Goondiwindi State Emergency Services (SES) has received a replacement Nissan Navara to enhance local emergency response efforts.

Funded through the Queensland Government’s SES Support Grant 2021-22, the vehicle will improve local response efforts for various emergency and disaster events such as floods, storms, and bushfires. The vehicle replaces the previous SES 2006 Nissan Navara.

Administered by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), the successful grant was secured by Goondiwindi Regional Council.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Chair, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM, emphasised the critical role of funding programs like the Queensland Government’s SES Support Grant in supporting councils statewide.

He highlighted the importance of SES volunteers in community emergency preparedness and said they provide essential support services during emergency and disaster events.

“Our SES volunteers are dedicated and selfless, often putting themselves at risk to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others,” he said. “This investment stregthens our local SES resources and builds on our community resilience."

Local Controller for the Goondiwindi Regional SES Unit, Ann McGlashan, has served since 2006 and held various leadership positions within the organisation.

“We are thankful for the support we have received from Council and the Queensland Government,” Mrs McGlashan said.

“The vehicle will help us to provide assistance and logistical support, equipment transportation and communication during emergency response efforts,” she said. Mrs McGlashan also encouraged community members to volunteer, highlighting opportunities for nationally accredited training in areas like first aid.

Interested individuals are invited to attend SES training sessions held every Wednesday at 6pm at the Goondiwindi Aerodrome to learn about SES operations and explore volunteer opportunities. Benefits of joining the SES include acquiring new skills, keeping fit, forming friendships, gaining qualifications, earning respect within the community, and being part of a team.

For more information or to volunteer with the SES, please contact Ann McGlashan at 0428 067 744.
