Get Ready Gundy Region!

Goondiwindi Regional Council actively supports and promotes many events across our region.  Whether you are just passing through town, visiting family and friends or a local you better start planning for some of the feature events scheduled in the region between now and Easter 2018.

The Council Tourism Strategy was adopted in mid-2015, and in the two short years Council has achieved huge wins through securing funding for three tourist attractions – Coolmunda Dam, Texas Rabbitt Factory, and Goondiwindi Customs House, and a feasibility study for an equestrian centre, establishing a trial free-camping option and Council are also in the process of rolling out a range of promotional collateral to match the new look, easy to use website.  In addition, Council has appointed a Community Development and Events Coordinator, Megan Long, who is focused on helping local and external groups run successful events in our region.

Events play a key role in fostering regional tourism and economic development.  Events are also a cost-effective way of promoting a region and its attractions – as an event grows, it attracts tourists in its own right.  The positive economic impact and interest in a community that a successful regional event can provide not only helps to build a sense of local pride but can also foster confidence and strengthen the community as a whole.

As a community, we all benefit from tourism and the tourism dollars spent in the region that support local business and ultimately contribute towards our everyday services.  Therefore, whilst occasionally tourists might affect traffic flow, parking availability or crowded cafes, we encourage you to show that warm country welcome and appreciate the benefits they bring to this region.

One recent example of success is that of the Albins ARB Goondiwindi 400 Off Road Rally. Goondiwindi Club Promoter Joe Bulmer was ecstatic when more than 100 nominations were received for the August event.  “We have one racing team that has booked out one whole Motel and I am sure the other hotels will be close to full as well. It is great to see and I am sure the whole town will benefit”

“There are plenty more on the horizon and the best part is, once they have visited the area, they seem to be keen to return” Megan explained today.
